Tish Reyes, our Site Producer and all-around creative superstar, joins us on the blog today to share an inventive spin on the classic classroom valentine.

This year is my daughter’s first proper Valentine’s Day as a Kindergartener in elementary school. We wanted something cute, fun, and easy to share with her classmates. The winner was this fun photo of her that looks like she’s holding a lollipop!

Step 1: Take Photo

Take a photo of your child as she holds a closed fist towards the camera. Tell her to imagine she is holding up and showing you a lollipop. Take a shot from slightly above to get a good perspective. I used my DSLR, but your smartphone camera will work, too.

Try a different pose. Have her hold her hand closer to her body.

A few things to keep in mind when you are taking the photo:

Background
Make sure the background is not too busy; leave blank space so that you can add text. A primarily light or dark background will make the text pop.

Space
Include enough space around her in order to add the valentine greeting text.

Focus
Be sure to focus on her face and not her fist.

Step 2: Add Text

Email the photo to yourself, and open it in a text-editing app. I used Over; it makes adding text and fun heart doodles easy. Tip: Watch the placement of embellishments. Don’t place words or artwork too close to the edge of the photo to avoid printing mishaps.

Step 3. Order Prints
Upload your final image to Snapfish and order 4×6 prints. Ensure that the cropping placements are correct, and edit as necessary. Tip: If you are short on time, use Snapfish’s Pick Up In-Store option to have prints ready in an hour at a store near you.

Step 4: Assemble Cards
With a sharp X-Acto knife, slice a small line at the top and bottom of the fist. Slip in the lollipop and pass out to classmates!

Want more Valentine’s Day inspiration?
